Until pregnancy, I had never:
- Cried over a television commercial
- Felt personally devastated by a fictional character dying
- Gotten irrationally angry over something tiny
- Felt exhausted and flat for no obvious reason
- Sat on the edge of tears at any given moment
Then came the third month of pregnancy… and the emotional rollercoaster hit.

The Science of Pregnancy Hormones & Emotions
During pregnancy, three major hormones rise significantly:
- Oestrogen
- Progesterone
- Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)
These hormonal shifts don’t just support your growing baby. They also influence neurotransmitters, the brain chemicals responsible for regulating mood.
In simple terms, your emotional response system is being recalibrated in real time.
This is why pregnancy mood swings, crying during pregnancy, anxiety, irritability, and even temporary low mood can feel so intense.
When Do Pregnancy Mood Swings Start?
For many women, emotional changes begin between 6 and 10 weeks in the first trimester.
Symptoms may ease in the second trimester when hormones stabilise, then return in the final months as your body prepares for birth.

3. Prioritise rest
Fatigue amplifies emotions. If you’re exhausted, everything feels heavier. Nap if you can. Go to bed earlier than usual.
4. Let yourself cry
Suppressing emotion often increases stress. A good cry can be surprisingly regulating. And yes, “I’m pregnant” is a perfectly acceptable explanation.
5. Avoid emotional triggers (when possible)
If you know something is likely to tip you over emotionally, it’s okay to skip it for now. Protect your energy.
When Is It More Than Hormones?
While mood swings are common, persistent sadness, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or feeling disconnected from daily life may indicate antenatal depression or anxiety.
If your emotions feel unmanageable or last for extended periods, speak with your midwife, GP, or obstetrician. Support is available, and you deserve it.
You Are Not “Going Mad”
Pregnancy hormones are powerful. Your body is growing a human and preparing for motherhood. That is extraordinary work.
