Top 8 South Pacific Honeymoon Islands from NZ & Australia | Luxury to Budget Paradise

In my 30 years on this earth I’ve been lucky enough to frolic on many beautiful beaches, but most of my favourites are still right here in our local Pacific. When it comes to your honeymoon, you don’t need long-haul flights to find paradise. The South Pacific islands offer turquoise lagoons, palm-lined beaches and unforgettable romance — often just a few hours from New Zealand or Australia.

Before you fall down a full wanderlust spiral, here are the 8 best South Pacific islands for a honeymoon — or even a destination wedding.

Tip: French Polynesia (Bora Bora & Moorea) is generally more expensive. For incredible value without sacrificing beauty, Fiji or the Cook Islands are excellent choices.

Bora Bora, Society Islands

Bora Bora is pure luxury. Think overwater bungalows, dramatic volcanic peaks and impossibly blue lagoons. Snorkel coral gardens, take a sunset cruise, enjoy private beach dinners or simply soak in the view of Mount Otemanu from your deck.

Best for: Ultimate luxury honeymoon.

Aitutaki, Southern Cook Islands

Aitutaki’s triangular lagoon is often described as one of the most beautiful in the world. It’s quieter than Rarotonga and ideal for couples wanting privacy and romance without crowds.

Best for: Seclusion and laid-back luxury close to New Zealand.

Taveuni Island, Fiji

Taveuni is known as Fiji’s “Garden Island” thanks to its lush rainforest and waterfalls. It’s perfect for adventurous couples wanting diving, hiking and dramatic scenery alongside their romance.

Best for: Nature lovers and scuba divers.

Viti Levu, Fiji

Fiji’s largest island offers incredible beaches including Natadola Beach, frequently ranked among the world’s best. Luxury resorts, golf, spa retreats and easy access make it ideal for relaxed honeymooners.

Best for: Easy access and resort-style comfort.

Moorea, Society Islands

Heart-shaped Moorea offers coral reefs, snorkelling, glass-bottom boat tours and dramatic mountain scenery. Slightly more affordable than Bora Bora, but still beautifully romantic.

Best for: French Polynesian beauty without Bora Bora pricing.

Efate, Vanuatu

Home to Port Vila, Efate blends culture, waterfalls and beachside romance. Explore Mele Cascades, snorkel coral reefs and enjoy French-inspired cuisine.

Best for: Culture and relaxed island life.

Vanua Levu, Fiji

Vanua Levu is wilder and more untouched. Think rainforest hikes, hot springs and remote eco-resorts.

Best for: Remote eco-luxury and privacy.

Rarotonga, Southern Cook Islands

Rarotonga offers the perfect mix of accessibility and beauty. Swim in reef-protected lagoons, explore local markets and enjoy sunset beach walks. It’s often considered one of the best-value romantic escapes for New Zealanders.

Best for: Value and convenience from Auckland.

Quick Comparison: Luxury vs Best Value

  • Ultimate Luxury: Bora Bora, Moorea
  • Best Value for Money: Fiji (Viti Levu), Rarotonga
  • Adventure + Romance: Taveuni, Vanua Levu
  • Secluded & Intimate: Aitutaki

Flight Times from NZ & Australia

  • Fiji: ~3 hours from Auckland, ~4 hours from Sydney
  • Rarotonga: ~4 hours from Auckland
  • Vanuatu: ~3.5 hours from Auckland, ~2.5 hours from Brisbane
  • Tahiti / Bora Bora: ~5 hours from Auckland

For most couples in NZ and Australia, these destinations are surprisingly accessible for a honeymoon straight after your wedding.
