Baby is around the size of a small watermelon and is now considered full term.
What is happening this week
Your baby is roughly 50cm and around 3.3 kilograms. Everything needed for life outside is in place — the lungs are producing surfactant, the brain is still growing, and they are mostly just putting on weight now.
The vernix and lanugo that have covered them are largely gone, although some babies arrive still wearing a bit of both.
How you might be feeling
Most people describe week thirty-nine as the longest week of the pregnancy. You are full term, which means it could be today, and it could also be another fortnight.
Sleep is poor. Everyone is texting. The impatience is real, and so is the quiet fear that sits underneath it.
Worth writing down
Write something today, even a line. The days right before a baby arrives are among the most completely forgotten of the whole pregnancy, because what comes next overwrites them entirely.
What you did on the last ordinary day is worth having.
Our Pregnancy Journal — Made With Love has a page for every week to forty, so there is somewhere for this to go. It pairs with Your First Years for afterwards, or take both together. If you are buying for someone else, the Pregnancy to Baby Keepsake Gift Set covers the whole journey.
