40 Weeks Pregnant | The Due Date That Isn't a Deadline

Baby is around the size of a small pumpkin, and your due date is an estimate rather than an appointment.

What is happening this week

Your baby is roughly 51cm and around 3.5 kilograms, though healthy babies vary enormously either side of that. They are fully developed and simply waiting.

Only around one in twenty babies arrives on their actual due date. Anything from 37 to 42 weeks is within normal range.

How you might be feeling

Forty weeks is emotionally strange. The date you have been counting towards for nine months arrives and often nothing happens, which nobody quite prepares you for.

The phone calls become relentless. Advice becomes unsolicited. Patience runs thin.

Worth writing down

Record how the waiting actually felt, not how you think you should describe it later. Frustration, fear, boredom and enormous anticipation all at once is the honest version, and it is the version your child will find most interesting one day.

Our Pregnancy Journal — Made With Love has a page for every week to forty, so there is somewhere for this to go. It pairs with Your First Years for afterwards, or take both together. If you are buying for someone else, the Pregnancy to Baby Keepsake Gift Set covers the whole journey.
