5 Weeks Pregnant – First Pregnancy Appointment & Early Scan Experience

Guest Pregnancy Journal – Week 5

Beautiful mum Samantha shares her early pregnancy reflections from her Made with Love Pregnancy Journal, documenting her very first GP appointment and scan.

Those first few weeks can feel fragile, surreal and filled with a mixture of hope and fear. Samantha candidly shares how it felt navigating bleeding, early scans and finally seeing that reassuring heartbeat.

5 Weeks Pregnant – Baby is the Size of an Apple Seed

What led you to your first pregnancy appointment?

Our first GP visit was actually urgent care after some bleeding. It wasn’t the most positive experience, both because of the situation and the doctor’s manner.

At our proper GP check, things felt much more positive and reassuring. It was a happy scan at 3.5 weeks.

Who attended your first pregnancy test or scan with you?

Andrew.

What was baby measuring at that stage?

Only a yolk sac visible, under 2cm.

What happened at your first scan?

Scan on 14.5.19 showed an embryo and a heartbeat. Such a relief! I sobbed.

Were there any changes made to your due date?

At that point we couldn’t say for certain, but possibly around 28 December 2019.

The second dating scan officially put my due date at 31 December 2019.

Did you find it reassuring to see your baby?

Not really at first, since it was just the sac and not an embryo, no heartbeat to see yet. It just felt like more waiting.

However, the technician said things looked normal for that stage, which helped.

The second scan was very reassuring.

Did anything surprise you?

That I was that much earlier than my last menstrual period suggested — five weeks instead of six.

What was the most emotional moment?

How happy I’d be to see the heartbeat.

The Emotional Side of Early Pregnancy

Those first few weeks can feel like limbo — especially if you’ve experienced bleeding or uncertainty.

Seeing a tiny flicker on a screen can shift everything. Relief, tears, gratitude — sometimes all at once.
